My son Joseph was born July 20, 2010. I had cramping all the previous day that night I had my bloody show at 2:30am, followed by cramping. When I called Nicole to tell her I didn't sleep much she decided to come over. When she checked me I was shocked to find out that I was 10cm. I took a shower and did my hair and makeup. 2hrs later we decided I was getting tired and broke my water. 8hrs later Joseph was born 9lbs 8oz! It was long and slow. The hospital would have given me no more than 3 hrs according to ACOG and the fact that he was 9.8. I'm positive I would have had a C-section. I didn't even tear! My experience was amazing.

“Oh, we have plenty of time! Neither of my girls came before her due date and I am sure this one will be no different. Actually, I am amazed at how great I feel. God’s design is really perfect. 40 weeks is just the right length for pregnancy. By this time last time, I was ready to give the baby an eviction notice! Barring any great unforeseen surprise, I’d say we have at least 3 weeks until we meet this little one.”

I hung up from the phone call with the midwife and headed to the calendar to write down “home visit” on the following day.

That night as I was falling asleep, a fleeting thought crossed my mind. What if my water broke tonight?

Gavin was born on June 11th after over 24 hours of labor and six hours of pushing. He was one day early from our due date and my first baby. My Husband, mother, father, Shelly, the doula, and Nicole were there from 6am until he was born at 4pm. I was planning on having Gavin in the birthing tub, but it just wasn't comfortable with me. Gavin had his arm up in some way so in between contractions I was still having a lot of pain. I needed a lot of stretching and help and support from every person. Nicole was able to help keep me stretched and held my cervix open till our little 6 pound 6 ounce peanut came. I didn't tear and was able to go shopping the next day since we had no clothes other than one outfit since we did not find out what we were having.

I had a feeling that my baby wanted to have nice weather to be born. I even had a dream to this effect. It turns out that winter was hanging on a bit longer this year than usual. Our high temperatures were nearly 15 degrees below normal. Saturday was actually a little warmer, and it was sunny.

We aren't big on Chinese food, but that night there wasn't much in the way of dinner in our pantry. Our two year old had just woken from a late nap, and was being a bear, so all three of us went to pick up our order. On the way home my husband and I discussed baby names. After months of discussing nothing but boys names, we started talking about girl names. We'd had a girl's name picked out before Darin was born, but something about it didn't seem as appealing this time. We decided in the car on a new choice.

Dinner was delicious, but my fortune was the highlight: “Nevermind tomorrow, TODAY is the day.” I scoffed. It was 8:30pm, today only had 3 hours left. Confucius laughed because around 10:30pm, my water broke.
